I can't speak for all houses, but I have wood floors.

When I look up at the cellar ceiling, I see boards nailed down in a diagonal pattern. Crappy lumber, but i'm assuming it is the sub floor for wood.

As I said, my home.
References :
you either have two layers of plywood or possibly plywood over shiplath. either way i doubt your going to find the rustic look your going for. Often somewhere in the house there will be holes drilled through for cable and ductwork and what not, you could look for one of these and see whats underneath.
References :
A bout 98% sure your floor is made of plywood, underneath the tile. More than likely, they are two layers of plywood. probably each 1/2" thick.
References :
Tile for bathrooms and high traffic areas for sure, You may pay more but properly installed it will far outlast any other surface.
Carpet over all is the cheapest floor covering. But you ll also replace it twice as fast.
Tile is the most expensive but last 3/4 times any other flooring so in the long run its usually better.
99% of the new builds I did in the past had ceramic in the entry ways, bath rooms and laundry rooms. Then it switched to hard wood in the kitchen ( I d like to see a more durable tile there) and then carpet every where else ( bedrooms living areas etc) to help keep cost down.
Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. GL
References :
20 years in flooring as a store owner/installer

The cost for this can vary widely depending on a few things such as how heavy (rough) the stucco texture is, if you would want the painter to do any miscellaneous patchwork or caulking on the stucco before painting, what your ground access is like, how high up the second story is, what kind of protection/masking is required to protect adjacent finishes, the ground and any cars parked in the parking lot, etc.

As a contractor we have done jobs like this for as little as $0.35 per S.F. to as high as $2.00. If you want to know for sure, get bids from 3 different local qualified painting contractors.
References :
if your going for low price then carpet but if you are trying to sell the house then wood for stairs, dining areas, and tile for like the entence, tile for the bathrooms and kitchen. The rooms should always have carpet but if it's a room like a office it could have wood. I think thats the best but again if your goung for low price then lamina tile for bath, kitchen, and carpet for everything else but wood or tile for entrence.
