House exterior painting. Can I paint latex over a stain?
Can I use latex paint to paint exterior house over previously stained cedar siding?
yes, but go over it first with a wire brush to knock off any loose stuff and get a firm surface for the primer to stick to, then prime it solid, and paint it. Get the primer tinted as close to the paint color as possible to make it easier to cover.

yes you can, latex over oil or latex is fine , just dont do oil over latex

needs to be primed before painting or latex wont stay on. after the first hard rain it will start to peel off

ern is wrong. do NOT paint latex over oil, it won’t stick…it’s the other way around..you can paint oil over latex.

With the paints now days you can paint over anything.
Is the stain transparent, solid, acrylic, or oil?
If it’s solid 100% acrylic, no primer needed just wash it good then use the paint.
Being as 100% solid acrylic stain is just like latex paint.

Prime first with an OIL primer. Something like Ben Moore’s MooreWhite. It will bond better and will help seal from tannin bleed (the pitch inside cedar). If you don’t do this before painting with latex, the paint will peel and/or reddish-brown spots will bleed through the paint job within a year.
