Take some steel wool, about grade #2 and score the door all over. Don't worry about the directions you go over it with. You want to develop some shallow scratches in it everywhere and give the primer coat some adhesion surface, expecially along the vertical side that has the lock and doorknob. Now a good primer would be the oil based Kilz. You can apply with roller, sponge brush, whatever. Let that dry completely and then apply an oil-based paint thinly, with a roller or cheap throwaway brush. Let dry, which will take a while, maybe 8 hours or more inside your garage. Then, apply another coat. This will make the door washable, as you usually get your hands dirty in the garage, as well as hold up to the temperature flucuations and high humidity levels usually found in garages.
