We’re painting exterior of Colonial home in New England. One of the painters we are considering suggested?
using a vinyl exterior window trim instead of scraping or replacing existing wooden window trim. How would this look? Would it cheapen look of house? Am concerned about resale affects…
The visual difference will be very small and be hard to tell except up close. As far as resale, I would rather have maintenance free vinyl than than have to paint.

If the house is fairly old–i.e., pre-WWII, rather than relatively new construction in the colonial style–adding vinyl window trim will make it visibly inauthentic, IMO. It’s the window equivalent of putting on siding instead of scraping and prepping regular clapboards before painting.
This painter is probably not appreciative of natural building products and doesn’t like prep work, which is a basic part of being a painter.
I’d ignore his suggestion.

Vinyl will look fine, & give a crisp look.

If the existing trim is in good condition, I would keep it original.
Vinyl trim would be OK if the siding is vinyl, but if it is an older home with clapboard siding, then the difference will be notable.
