What is a good rate for interior painting?

…for a 12×20 room? How about for a hallway that includes a staircase? Or is it usually just by the hour?

I am a painter and can tell you what I charge but will not matter unless I live in your area. Call two paint stores and ask what the going prices are in the area, they should give you an approximate. And/or get three quotes from painters and you should get an idea.

Which is the less expensive; refinishing natural wood floor or laying tile?

Looking at a house that needs a little TLC, starting with the floors. Which would be the less expensive way to go; to pull up the carpet and refinish the hardwood floor or lay tile? This is 2500 sq ft.
Keep in mind…we live in Southern CA where everything costs more!

Dusty is right . refinishing 2500 s/f is WAY cheaper than redoing it with tile. To do tile, the wood should come out. A new substrate for the tile , tile and tile labor will run you total closer to 12/ 15 $ a s/f. This doesn t even count the rip out and disposal of all that wood.
Redoing wood would be closer to 4/5$ a s/f. And with that amount of wood , you may be able to get a discount, thats a good size job. And ask for a price break for that size job.

I already sanded the wall, next I plan to put a coat of primer, then paint, then primer and that’s it.

The very best paint for bathrooms is Zinsser mold and mildew paint. It prevents mold and mildew from growing from the bathroom steam.
It has a primer in it and it is tintable. You can save yourself the step of priming. I comes in satin and semi gloss.
Semi gloss is the best for bathrooms.
It comes in interior / exterior.

Is there such a thing of painting your home exterior bricks?

I live in home that is really old and would like to have a fresh apperance on my exterior bricks. I was thinking of replacing them with new ones intill I saw this website that offers paint services on bricks. They promote permant color on the bricks and no peeling.Has anyone had this done before? Yes you can. How you go about it depends on the condition and type of brick you have. As with any painting procedure surface should be free of all loose, flaking, and dirt (Polution)if close to road and highways. Repair any damaged mortar joints with a good quaility mortar mix and I would recommend a good powerwashing to give you the best possible surface for paint to hold to.
TYPE of brick-
If you have a inferior non kiln fired brick (large deposits of white(calcium) powery deposits and soft textured dull surface best procedure would be either a oil based exterior primer or a top quaility latex sealer/primer hopefullty with extended drying time for obsorbtion. Follow with 1-2 coats exterior finish with a minimum of low sheen finish. As with any paint, the higher the gloss the easier to keep clean but finish to enhance but not to distract from surrounds are recommended,
Quaility paint stores can provide you with manufactures recommendations on applications and coverage estimations for purchase of paint.

Exterior Painting, can you use a dark color in the roof peaks and a lighter color below?

I’m told that the rule of thumb is dark on the bottom. I just installed green shingles and was thinking of a dark teak (railway tie) for the peaks and a lighter brown on the bottom. I’m a guy so don’t ask me the what the designers call lighter brown. The decks are a dark brown. The house is a ‘D’ log and is stained with a light brown solid stain all over with dark brown fascia and soffits. Your thoughts? ty

Yes you can. The rule is typically dark on the bottom, but that applies mostly if the square footage being covered by the two colors are roughly equal. A dark accent color is fine as long as it is not to large (maybe 1/3 of the height of the space between the eave and the peak of the roof). Try and line it up with something that makes sense (the top or bottom of the windows, etc.).

Look online for Queen Anne architecture and you should get some great ideas.

What preparation needs to be done for exterior painting?

I am looking to pain the exterior of our home. We currently have a cedar. Obviously the painting is the easy part, but I’m looking to hire somebody who knows how to do a good job with the prep work. I want to find out what questions to ask. If somebody could tell me what steps need to be taken before the painting begins I would really appreciate it.

Has this been painted/stained before or just sealed
What I the condition of the wood …holes, dry rot, nail pops..etc

Doing pirouettes on the CARPET same as doing them on hard wood floors/tile?

Doing pirouettes is different on different types of flooring, and how many you can do depends on the flooring. It’s easier to spin on hardwood/tiles, but it’s easier to control and land your pirouettes on carpet. I would suggest practicing your pirouettes on the ballet floor (or wherever you do them during dance class) or somewhere with a similar flooring, that way you can learn to control them and do them well and do lots on the right ballet flooring you would normally use.

I want to put in a new floor–approx. 200 sq ft.. What would the approx. cost be for: wood, wood laminate, or tile (stone, ceramic)–including supplies? I’m looking for cost in US dollars using medium quality products.

wood laminate flooring comes as price per square foot. The room or area size is 200 square foot., but you have to take in the reality of corners, wasted materials, etc due to pattern and cutting sizes. In Nevada our flooring costs are running 99 cents to 5.00 a square foot for the flooring. Average 10-15 year flooring should be $1.50 give or take a square foot. Watch you local ads , usually have sales on it. Always buy more than you need. Laminate flooringh comes in packages that vary in amounts. For your are, I would say purchase 2 extra packages. Always can return 1 if not opened. The rule is also to open 2-3 boxes and use 1 of each box and keep the rotation going to assure the same pattern, and to vary the color difference from package to package.
Other costs wil be to buy the pad that goes under the floor. Depends on what type of flooor ypou have. Wood floor or cement flooring. Make sure you lay pad and tape the seams good to keep the moisture out. The major cost is the add on pieces as in going from carpet to flooring, edgeing, corners etc. Ask what the costs on those are before buying the flooring. They can run 25.00 a piece most come 4 foot long some 8 foot. A good amount to say materials for your 200 sq foot would be a good 400 dollars. Buy a special saw blade to cut it. They are 15-20.00 each, has to be able to cut smooth or you will have chips in the ends . I put in 3500 square foot floor multi layer rooms and I ended up 3 planks to many. But always want to keep on hand so as to damages you can replace., and not have to worry about discontinued items. Remember to measure twice cut once. Good rule is to lay the plank down where it need to go and mark there, Keep all cut pieces and scraps till yopur all done, yopu may need a small piece somewhere. Remember to offset the planks, and to keep 1/4 inch from walls. Make sure the fit is good before moving on to next row. Is Hell to have to go back in middle and put together pieces that were not set right. You have to undo all way back to that spot and start over. Do not nail or glue any of it down as it needs to expand and contract with the weather.

I was wanting to paint my front door, but what are the rules? Do I need to paint my garage door and shutters to match or with complementary colors? Right now everything is white! Any suggestions!

You can do complementary or you can even go neutral or even match shutters. But I don’t think you need to do anything with garage door unless you really want more character. And sometimes that’s good and sometimes it can be a bit too much.
