Can I put a tile floor in the kitchen when it opens directly to the living toom with Hard wood flooring?

sure….put down your underlayment and tile away, the only problem may be that you would have a hight difference between the two rooms. They make edging for this to go in the doorways.

If the wood grain is at a right angle to the tile, you might get away with it, but typically you would use some type of transition piece to bridge the gap, and adjust for the height difference.
