Wood flooring is a firm favorite and most popular for living areas. Hardwood floors are one of the easiest flooring types to keep clean.
References :
http://www.ciciliotandson.com/index.php

When I was a kid growing up, we had hardwood floors in the living room with a big area rug and I remembering having to dust mop the floors quite often. Then wall to wall carpeting was the big deal so that's what my parents got and everyone raved about carpeting, so this is probably as cyclical as other things. I myself prefer carpeting in a neutral color because I like the softness under my feet. When I visited my sister in law they had hardwood floors everywhere and they were so noisy if you walked with your shoes on. Plus I have a dog and I imagine wood floors getting all scratched to heck.
References :
If you could afford it, it would be great to get cheaper laminate wood flooring and place carpet on top. That way you can have your cake and eat it too! I have laminate floor in my living room and love it. I guess it may depend on how much long you decide to live there.
References :
That would depend on your budget. Hardwood is the best, but most expensive. Carpet is hard to clean and collects dirt. Tiles are ok, but a little cheap looking. If you want hardwood, but don't have that much money, get laminate... its about 3 times cheaper and easier to install. With some good laminate you can't even tell if its real hardwood or just laminate. When we do home renovation for clients, half go with laminate.
References :
http://www.onerenohome.com

I like wood, and I have no doubt that once you rip up your carpet and see what's under it, you will too!
References :
I prefer wood flooring. Good looking, easier to clean and less likely to get stained/torn than carpeting. Tile is nice but it tends to make the sound echo badly in a large room.
Also I live in a warm climate (Texas) so carpeting isn't needed for warmth.
References :
I like carpet too! Especially carpet now a days: Mohawk carries an eco-friendly carpet and Shaw sells green flooring as well. There are a lot of tricks when installing hardwood. You can actually install vinyl (Konecto) and save some $$$ on the real thing. This type of flooring imitates stone, like granite, marble, as well as hardwood, tile etc! Its amazing! Its easy to install as well!

Here is a great flooring information site:

See what you can work with!::::

Wood,
carpet is warm on your feet however it is a dirt monger.. If anyone has allergies it should be abolished
I have a home in the interior of BC and one in Alabama, the one in Alabama is going to have the floors stripped down to original wood and refinished the floors in my home in BC are all laminate and PVC with a small portion of lino, in the kitchen and baths.
I love it.
Throw down some area rugs if you want it dresses the place to your liking
References :
Texas: I honestly prefer either wood or tile in the main living areas, (which you choose depends on the rest of the decor). Wood or tile gives the room a sleeker, more modern look and because the main living area has the highest volume of traffic, carpet can begin to look worn and dingy in a short time.

I think carpet in the bedrooms is okay, but I prefer wood/tile for the rest of the house.
References :
Tile throughout my house, except for bedrooms/computer room.
