Also, check with the BBB in your area to see if there are complaints and how many were resolved, how many weren't. Ask for references and check them out. Don't rely on his word, he could have his friends/wife/family be references. Go to where he said he did work and ask around. Get everything in writing and make sure you do not pay him the full amount up front. Ask for a written guarantee and estimate. Tell him you want to know what extras he may require BEFORE he does them. Get everything in writing. And, it wouldn't hurt to get a license plate number, just in case. I knew a guy that had his own "company." He underbid everyone, telling them there was no middleman so he could charge less. He hired 16-17 year olds to do the work while he took off for the bar. When people starting complaining about the shabby work, he refused to take their calls and moved on to another neighborhood. His "company" wasn't registered anywhere and no one could catch up with him. Cheap isn't always best.
