get a good primer and some coarse grit sand paper. Scratch up the surface of the old paneling, put on the primer, let it dry completely, then paint with whatever! you may need to make 2 coats on it to cover the embossing completely, or you could if you liked the embossed pattern go ahead and antique after putting on plain paint.

No, it won’t work.

1. thoroughly clean the surface, using a solution of TSP (trisodium phosphate) (follow package instructions)

2. prime the surface using a hiqh quality primer designed for surface. (note that most primers can be tinted to a shade similar to the topcoat)

3. then you can paint

Without the surface preparation (cleaning and priming) any paint is likely to fail.

Don’t use Behr paint. Go to a REAL paint store like Sherwin Williams. Yes, first you have to prime your paneling with an oil-base bonding primer, after that any sort of paint will work, it’s all in the proper primer. I’ve painted over paneling several times and it turns out great. The most important thing is to go to a real paint store and not a Lowe’s , Home Depot etc. The people at the paint store will make sure you have the right primer so your paint won’t just scratch off. I’m a professional painter, I know what I’m talking about.

I would try a small area first like behind a sofa or piece of furniture and see how it works out.
We painted white over regular painting without using Kilz first (which we were told to do) and it worked out fine, and has been up quite a few years now Having to wallpaper first is a lot of trouble you may not have to go thorough.

When we covered the paneling in our basement, we used textured wallpaper. It is thicker than standard wallpaper and (obviously) textured. Once that was up, we painted over it with standard latex paint. You can find it at any home improvement store.
